Cannabis and hemp infused beverages are coming to a store near you. Anyone with a clear view to manufacturing and marketing trends in cannabis and hemp can see that THC- and CBD- infused drinks are going to be a billion dollar market segment. Earlier this year Corona owner Constellation Brands invested $4 billion in a Canadian cannabis company, and shortly thereafter, fellow brewer Molson Coors announced it was teaming up with with a Canadian marijuana company to “create [a] joint venture focused on non-alcoholic, cannabis-infused beverages”. With brands like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Unilever publicly expressing interest in the sector, it is a forgone conclusion that high-quality, standardized products are being developed for market. In regards to manufacturing and testing, beverages present unique technical challenges compared to other cannabis commodity products. These products are required to be highly standardized in dose, and shelf-stable. Since cannabinoids like THC and CBD are very hydrophobic and have limited solubility in water, manufacturers typically formulate their products with emulsifiers, solubility aids and complex mechanical process for blending and homogenization. The end result may be a crystal clear, refreshing mood tonic; But, it can be challenging to deconstruct these products in order to analyze them for Quality Assurance purposes. Accurate and consistent recovery of cannabinoids bound to emulsifiers and dextrans in solution can be an analytical challenge. With this in mind, EVIO Labs, Inc. is partnering with Greener Frontiers to collaborate on developing and validating sample preparation and analytical testing of cannabis and hemp formulated beverages. With this partnership, EVIO’s methods validation team will work closely with Greener Frontiers’ food chemists and expert formulators to develop and validate special preparative and analytical techniques for quality and safety testing of these products.
