INSTRUMENTATION

The Testing Process

​Testing requirements and processes vary by state. Review all applicable rules and regulations for your state.

Contact the lab to schedule an appointment to either bring in cannabis or hemp products for testing or have a laboratory representative perform on-site random sampling.

After sampling, the batch may be labelled and sealed in a tamper evident container. This not only helps to ensure a traceable “chain-of-custody”, but also ensures buyers that the data on a test report actually represents the material that is in the container.

Back at the lab the sample is photographed and undergoes a visual inspection for contaminants like mold or foreign matter. Any visual contaminants are noted on the final certificate of analysis.

After the visual inspection, a series of water measurements may be performed on plant materials. Moisture content describes the concentration of water in a sample by weight. Water activity describes the likelihood any of that moisture will leave the Cannabis material to support the growth of contaminants like bacteria or fungi.

The sample is then prepared for any requested chemical or microbiological analyses. See the Descriptions of Analytical Services section below to learn more about various testing services available.

CHEMICAL TESTING

CANNABINOID ANALYSIS

Not only are producers and consumers concerned with product purity and safety, but there is also a need to properly characterize Cannabis potency.

​We screen for many primary cannabinoids found in Cannabis including THC, THCa, CBD, CBDa, and more!

TERPENE ANALYSIS

We can identify and measure many common terpenoid compounds found in Cannabis flowers and extracts. The cannabinoid and terpenoid profile together may provide a look into the therapeutic potential of a Cannabis inflorescence or extract.

WATER MEASUREMENTS

Moisture content is a measurement of the concentration of water in a sample while water activity is a measurement of how available any of that water is to other things, like microorganisms.

The moisture content of properly dried and cured Cannabis should be around 15%. The water activity measurement should be below 0.65aw to protect against spoilage during storage.

PESTICIDE RESIDUE ANALYSIS

Pesticide residues present on Cannabis materials can pass into Cannabis smoke or vapor, presenting health risks to consumers.

We can assist in the detection of any number of over 200 different pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, growth regulators, and other agrochemicals.

RESIDUAL SOLVENT ANALYSIS

We can assist in the detection of many residual solvents used in Cannabis extract production including butane, propane, hexane, acetone, ethanol, and more. Contact us to learn more about available residual solvent analysis services.

MYCOTOXIN SCREENING

Mycotoxins are dangerous chemical byproducts of certain fungi. We can screen for common mycotoxins that may be present in Cannabis including various Aflatoxins and Ochratoxins.

We offer a number of services to screen for bacterial and fungal contaminations in Cannabis and Cannabis infused products like:
